In some cells, certain sections of DNA are bundled tight in a mass of proteins, in such a way that no RNA (and thus no protein) can be made from them. This turns off those genes. In other sections, only a few proteins might be keeping the DNA turned off, so that it could quickly be unravelled and used to make proteins. People pass judgments towards others without being properly informed and I think that it is extremely important for students to be exposed to all different cultures. Since I have done my student teaching in the last few years I actually was surprised at how much the students cultures were influenced by the assignments. I know that in my high school they had career days and different programs that were set up to help the students decide which career path they might be interested in. Teachers need to support their students no matter what their dreams are, and they need to be pointed in the right direction in order to fully benefit from all that is offered. All teachers should have at least some information on the different cultures of the students In their classrooms. I feel that if I were in a classroom I would have each of the students write down a few things about their home life and some of the traditions that they practice with their families. It would be up to me however to do some research on whatever I didn’t already know about. This way it would be easy to incorporate the different cultures into my lesson plans on a daily basis. I would want my students to familiar nd accepting of different cultures and traditions. During assignments or lessons that have creativity elements I would want the students to feel free and comfortable to talk about their cultural practices. Children like to read and learn about things that they are somewhat familiar about. Jaspers interest in reading â€Å"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian† shows that he likes to read about his own culture and traditions and things he is f amiliar with. Answer: Introduction: A USA based organization has its branches spread across the world and for a new project which has been taken up for a client, the company had outsourced a part of their work to third party vendors who supplied human resource for managing their MIS systems involving activities like data entry and data analysis. The company has a team in place with 3 people working on roll with the MNC while 3 of the new hires were taken from a Human Resource Consultancy. Harold, who is one of the on-roll employee was facing issues in managing tasks and was overburdened. Thus, the management decided to assign one of the consultancy hire, named Elica to him for managing data related tasks. Harold being a very experienced person in the company has a good hold over its operations and carries a significant amount of knowledge about how things worked. He was very sound with the technology. Elica on the other side is a person with good amount of experience, is creative and can catch hold of concepts fast. However, she has been working as an entrepreneur before joining the organization and was not used to taking orders. Harold was a pure perfectionist and inflexible person who demanded work from Elica on strict deadlines as well as demanded flawless work. He was very dominating and wanted things to get done as per his understanding and to be done real fast. Despite being an adaptable and highly knowledgeable person, conflicts grew between Elica and Harold as Elica could not take Harold's dominating attitude very positively. In addition, she was being tracked by Harold for every minute she spent and soon she found herself overburdened with work and an extreme pressure for the demand of speed. Moreover, Harold would compare her working with his own every time telling her that she was not so efficient as he thought while he took her interview. She was somewhat fearful of having any conflicts as she was new to office so did not speak against anything Harold demanded and kept working as she was asked to. Initially, Elica was very enthusiastic and took every work that came her way as an opportunity to learn and grow in the company but with tension rising between the two colleagues, she became less interested in work and started to avoid taking new work and slowed down in the work she had been given making Harold impatient. This lead one day to a major fight between the two when Harold asked her straight why had she become slow in her work suddenly. He asked her to sit beside him so that he could check out what she was doing wrong. This appeared to be very uncomfortable for Elica and she became impulsive blurting out her feelings all of a sudden. She told that she did not like Harold sitting on her head tracking her every second and that she was not a fresher to be treated like that but had over 8 years of experience working in corporate and in business. She ended up shouting at Harold to which Harold responded with anger. While they were having the fight, the seniors came to understand the situation. The seniors made both the employees speak one by one. While Elica clearly explained her reasons for showing anger, Harold simply said that he couldn't work with such a resources and wanted her out of the team. The other two on-roll and 2 off-role employees remained silent and did not intervene in the situa tion. After the talk was over, seniors were unable to decide who was right and thus, they told Elica to temporarily work with other off-role employee named Arvind. While she was working on the same things and reporting to same person that is Harold, she was stopped from talking to him directly and every time she needed any support, she would reach out to Arvind. However, because of the work requirements, she often needed information or talk to Harold which she did considering practical side and Harold also gave her whatever information was required but the conflicts remained between them and they could not stand each other. Whenever Elica needed Harold's inputs, she would first approach others in the team including Arvind and only when she had no choice but to talk to Harold, did she approach him directly. On the other side, if Harold wanted something to be done by Elica, he would send an email to Arvind asking him to help get the work done from Elica. Both Elica and Harold were professionally dedicated to work and everything was happening as per schedule but there was no or rate direct communication between them. The team knew the situation well but never was any initiative taken to resolve the conflict permanently. They just decide to keep avoiding conflicts and let the things move as they were. When the whole team used to meet, the conflict between the two came out in the form of blames and resistances but the two in conflict never spoke to each other directly during meeting. There was an environment of tension and pressure in every meeting in which the two participated as team could not expect any help or cooperation from the two. Both colleagues appeared to be quite inflexible to bend their conscience, be diplomatic to improve situation. The on-role employees were to take decisions on tasks to be completed every day and the same were done in part by them while a major portion was to be delegated to outsourced employees. The responsibilities given to on-contract employees were assigned by on-role employees. Both the members of the project stood at the same level in designation but because of the p roject arrangement, the position of on-role employees was higher in understanding and thus, off-role employees reported to them. The new employee who was on-contract , Elica joined the organization and was made to report to Harold who was an on-role employees. Both employees have same years of experience but Harold had more experience of telecom domain while Elica has been into several IT organizations after which she worked as a business consultant for entrepreneurs. While Harold was very dominating, Elica was not used to handling domination from seniors as she has been an entrepreneur for a long time before joining the company. Elica understood her responsibilities and took ownership of the same but at the same time, Harold has been treating her like a typical employee who may not be serious about and thus, tried keeping a very close control over her by monitoring her every minute. This upset Elica but she did not speak for long as she did not want to get into any conflicts at the start of her job. However, as she did not resist, the behaviour of Harold became extremely commanding and Elica was unable to control her discomfort. The result was that Elica found herself always stressed at work which also affected her personal life as she would take more time to finish her work and went home l ate. When Harold charged on her one day asking her explanations for taking more time than expected to finish her work, she responded back with anger, telling Harold that she was not supposed to be treated like a fresher. The key reason for this conflict could be due to personality differences between Harold who was competitive and Elica who was cooperative. While Harold believed in keeping close monitoring and comparing work of one employee with other to remain competitive, Elica was more of a social person who believes in building teams by bringing them together and working with team spirit. The work however, demanded more of a controlled and competitive approach at the stage as per Harold which is why he was being monitoring Elica closely without having any considerations of how she felt about his behaviour or if his style of work affected her performance in positive or negative ways4. They  don’t  need  it  for  many  reasons. Parents  know  where  they  are  any  ways. There  is  always  an  adult  around. In  case  of  an  emergency,  the  school  can  contact  the  parents. There  is  also  a  phone  in  the  office  and  every  classroom. Kids  that  young  are  easily  distracted  and  those  having  a  phone  will  make  it  worse. If  they  have  a  phone,  they  won’t  do  their  class  work  or  homework. They  are  not  as  social  because  they  are  too  distracted  with  the  latest  Smartphone. Kids wouldn’t have as much fun with their friends that are over. They would be too involved in looking at their cell phones. Having  a  cell  phone  when  in  elementary  school  can  help  when  kids  are  walking  home  from  school. The students are more probable to text parents to get them out of a test or quiz. They are more likely to get into trouble. During class, they could be internet surfing and texting. They also could make wrong calls to authorities. Making an artificial call to authorities can make what you did a lot worse. Some parents think that schools should let students have their phones in use during school. They are a little more independent. They will always change their mind of what they are doing. If they have a parent pick them up, and they do an activity after school, and that activity gets canceled for some reason, the kids have to let the parents know. If a shooting happens during school hours, and the kids made it out, that would be a comfortable thing to do is to let the parents know. However, if they are stick in a classroom for a school shooting, it’s an easy way to text the parents to let them know that they kids are okay. Thankfully, the Deer Creek Middle school shooting happened after school hours, and almost everyone got away safely. The Deer Creek shooting was probably one of the things that scared me. I knew a lot of people that went to the school at the time. A gentleman came to the school grounds and started to shoot as students were leaving to head home. The shooter had gone to the school before to look around. He shot a girl in the arm and a boy in the chest. None of the students died. Students were either already on the bus, walking or getting picked up by a parent. Many students ran to Stony Creek, a nearby elementary school, to get away. Some of the students managed to jump into some strangers’ cars as well. Dr. Benke, a math teacher who was on bus duty, managed to get him onto the ground without getting more rounds off. Students who had phones were able to text friends to see if they were okay and to text parents. High school can be like college. The school should let the teachers pick if students are allowed to have phones or not. Students in high school are a little more responsible. The students know what is wrong and right. Students in high school are a little more responsible. If they really need to use their phones, they will go out into the hallways. For example if they needed to call their parents or any relative, for some reason. Most students are good about not using their phones during tests. Some classes do have some days where they need to look things up and that is where the smart phones come in handy. For example, if you are taking a foreign language class and need to look it up, you have the phone to look it up. That is if the teacher is busy and you can find it in the book. If they teachers don’t say anything about phones they can’t get mad at the students. Cell  phones  should  be  very  limited  in  high  school  but  not  as  strict  as  middle  school. For example,  they  should  be  allowed  during  passing  period  and  lunch  but  not  classes. Phones  should  be  turned  in  when  they  are  taking  a  test  or  quiz. Students  are  allowed  to  get  it  after  everyone  is  done. If  they  have  their  phones  out  the  students  can  take  a  picture  of  it  and  send  it  to  other  students  as  well  as  looking  up  answers. Students could also not pay attention to something that they need to know for college or their career path. They won’t focus on what is really important. Cell phones already take over so much of student’s lives. College is a big campus to control, that’s why teachers should be allowed to pick whether or not to have cell phones in their classrooms. The president of the university can tell the teachers, that cell aren’t allowed. The students are old enough not to use phones in class. Nevertheless, there are certain times during class that it is appropriate time to use a phone. If a teacher has a more than 30 students, it is hard to see who has a phone or not. Students who are in a class that is not allowed to use a cell phone, may still try to sink using their phone. Many people can be split on phones in class in college. Ages in college, especially at Metro vary. Students who are older may have kids and need to be in contact with their kids. If they have later classes between one and three they may have their kid’s text them to let them know that they are home or got over to a friend’s house. As you go up in education the more it will change. Plus, the more you have to be responsible for yourself and your actions. Anyone having a cell phone can make you want and not want to do things that you normally do or not do. Students are more likely to use their phones during school than outside of school. Gender Identity Formation essays

Gender Identity Formation essays I don't often think of gender identity as a function of formative experiences in my life. I learned how to walk, how to talk, how to play the piano, and how to play football, but I have always been a male, progressing from boy to man. Some would say that gender identity formation is completely a function of socialization - that my identity as a man is completely determined by the forces of my family's expectations, and those of the society in which I matured. But I believe that while much of my gender identity is a socialization function, equally powerful is the genetically programmed information in my body, and the presence of testosterone, as opposed to progesterone and estrogen, that make me the man My experiences were varied in regard to the events which formed my gender identity. My family was small, and since my dad worked most of the time, my family socialization was with my mom, and my two sisters. I find that I am much more prone to communication than many of my male companions, which is said to be a more female trait. I also have developed a deep understanding of the role of emotions, and the process of emotional development. This also is said to be a predominantly female trait. However, I have never confused my position in the world as a male, nor have I ever pondered the benefits of being female. I am a male of my species, Growing up, I was awkward in my relationships to other guys my age, not having any of them to relate to in my home. Looking back I see that I had more, closer female friends than male friends. When the other kids on the block were joining cub scouts, and little league baseball, my dad didn't have time, to make the commitment to get me to and from events. If we’re lucky, we get to work with the sort of boss whose a pleasure to be around- fair, pleasant, supportive, decisive, and encouraging. If this is your reality, then count your blessings and try to appreciate your situation. However, if you have a boss who’s something else, then it can pose some real challenges. One category of tricky boss includes the one who never seems to know what he or she wants. They either constantly waste time dragging their heels and delaying making any type of clear decision, or they’re forever changing what they tell you to do. Both of these types can be quite difficult to work with and can really impact your ability to perform your job effectively. There are many, different oppressions throughout human society that are intricately woven together and interconnected. Many of these oppressions are formed within a patriarchal, Christian theology and involve the body: the body of Earth, the bodies of women, the body of animals. Sallie McFague sets up a model of bodies to help break these connected oppressions. McFague’s work emphasizes that the body and its oppressions are what connects Christian theology, feminism, and ecology. Her model focuses on the metaphorical idea that the body of the earth is the body of God (McFague, 1993). To better understand this model, we must first examine how bodies have been viewed and affected within the Christian religion framework of our western culture. Christianity has a long tradition of focusing on embodiment. Its basic practices and ideas of incarnation, Christology, the Resurrection, and the Eucharist, even the metaphor of the church being the body of Christ, all involve embodiment in some way (McFague, 1993). Yet, with these embodiment characteristics of Christianity, this religion still devalues nature and women’s bodies. It has set up a patriarchal framework for western culture of devaluing the body, and women. â€Å"Western culture and religion have a long, painful history of demeaning the female by identifying her with the body and with nature, while elevating the male by identifying him with reason and spirit† (McFague, 1993). This idea reinforces stereotypes that oppress women and separates the body from the mind and soul. Until we reconcile this dis connect of the body and mind, we cannot fully love all bodies; this leads to the inability to love the â€Å"body† of the earth (McFague, 1993). Everyone has heard about global problems. Television and the press often writes about storms, droughts, melting of glaciers, or hunger in Africa. But not too many of us know the details, and the stories behind those problems. These days the biggest environmental problems are: Global warming, Pollution, drought, overpopulation, deforestation, Endangered species. Let’s start from global warming. Global warming is the process by which the Earth’s average atmospheric temperature increases over time.In general Global warming means the difference in the Earth’s global climate over time. This process is timeless and still accelerating. Other big environmental problem is pollution. Pollution can be very diverse. There are several types of pollution, how air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. I think everyone knows what’s mean air, water and soil pollution, but do you know what means noise pollution? Noise pollution refers to undesirabl e levels of noises caused by human activity that disrupt the standard of living in the affected area. We need talk more about pollution, because everyone can contribute to the solving of this problem. Next environmental problem is drought. Lithuanians think, that drought is never going to be our problem, but is it true? Drought is defined as a long period of time when there is no rain. Drought can be further prejudiced by human activity. Drought often have a significant impact on agriculture. There are other drought consequences. Everyone heard about very large number of people in China, India. This issue is not relevant to us, but in rest of the world this is a very big problem. Situation, when there are too many people living in a certain area, is called overpopulation. This problem is very important to South Asia and Africa. Some countries, such as China, tries to reduce the birth rate, but other don’t have money to try to stop this problem. Other big environmental problem is deforestation. Deforestation is, when forests are lost and not replanted. Sometimes deforestation happens when people change the land into farms and cities. A lot of deforestation is from removal of all the trees from a forest for wood or fuel. Without the forests, the natural habitats of the animals are lost and lots of animals are dying. There are some facts about deforestation. And the last environmental problem is Endangered species. All problems, IÂ  have told you before, have influence for animals and plants. Pollution, global warming, droughts are dangerous for the environment. And some animals and plants are dissapearing. Some animals, we are never going to see again. Other endangered animals are included in the Red Data Book. There is a list of extincted animals.

Biography and History Essay

The fourth chapter of Quibuyen’s â€Å"A Nation Aborted† explores the meaning of Rizal’s intellectual work by scrutinizing the fusion of Rizal’s biography and history. Quibuyen begins his chapter by refuting what Austin Coates and Maria Guerrero have said- that Rizal inspired the Filipinos to make the first revolution in Asia single-handedly with ideas all his own. Quibyen presents in this chapter two crucial things to consider in interpreting Rizal’s work: (1) Rizal’s ideas that embodied like a form of debate and also the Blumentrit (2) Rizal’s vision and nationalist projects and how it affected Filipinos’ thoughts and feelings. Quibuyen mentions lots of personas such as Father Jose Burgos, Grciano Lopez Jaena, Jose Rizal Andres Bonifacio ,Apolinario Mabini, Antonio Luna , Marcelo H. del Pilar, Gregorio del Pilar, Emilio Jacinto, among others who were destroyed by the system they wished to radically transform. He further said t hat they were consumed by the intensity of the struggles. Quibuyen only contention is to prove that Rizal was not the only one who contributed for what we do endure in the present. Quibuyen enumerates three moments that make up the national consciousness of the Filipinos: (1) Burgos as the principal figure and the spectator 11-year-old Rizal. (2) the time when Bonifacio saw and heard Rizal as the speaker in the inauguration of the La Liga and also when Bonifacio founded the Katipunan (3) Rizal’s martyrdom and the beginning of the Revolution. These essential events happened in 1872, 1892, 1896 respectively. Quibyen points out that the making of the nation started with the time of Father Burgos until the time of Rizal’s execution. According to Felipe Buencamino Sr., liberal Peninsulars introduced to the Philippines the ideas of French Revolution which enlightened the Filipinos. It was in 1834 when the Philippines facilitated the opening to the national trade. Moreover, he emphasized that the first Liberal Party in the country was not a party in the sense of being formally constituted like the Liga or the Katipunan rather it involved a loose alliance of: Comite de Reformadores and Juventud Escolar Liberal. The former consisted of priests, professors and the businessmen while the latter consisted students. Hence, Buencamino stated that the first â€Å"liberal† as he observes, was fighting for Filipinos equality with the Spaniards. Filipinos as per Buencamino presupposed the basic principles of Enlightenment: freedom, human rights, and man’s dignity. Quibuyen therefore pointed out that these principles are not opposed to the moral teachings of Catholicism. That is why Burgos, also known as â€Å" Catholic Liberal† became the movement’s de facto leader and spokesman. Furthermore, Quibuyen mentioned the two moral perspectives which underpinned the movement: Enlightenment and Catholicism. Furthermore, Quibuyen stated in this chapter that the liberal movement aimed for equality among Filipinos not only in terms of secularization or Church but also equality in terms of military and the government. The Filipino liberals founded the first Filipino periodical El Eco Filipino in Madrid to rebut the friars racist periodical La Verdad. The latter discriminated the Filipinos and promoted that the Filipino was inferior to the Peninsular and incapable of assuming positions held by the Peninsular. Quibuyen further said that Rizal stood out as the Tagalog Christ in the Pasyon notwithstanding the facts that lots of Ilustrados were executed at the Bagumbayan shortly after the Katipunan’s exposure in 1896. That is why Bonifacio transalted Rizal’s Mi Ulitimo Adios to disseminate to the Filipinos. Quibuyen emblematized Rizal and Bonifacio not only as the symbol for Enlightenment but also and more important, of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Quibuyen mentions in the chapter Rizal’s influences, juvenile writings and college readings that would determine Rizal’s historical works and constitute his major contributions to the nationalist movement. Among these events are: his prize-winning poem A La Juventud Filipina, his writing of Junto al Pasig etc. Moreover, when Rizal went to Europe and began his historical project, he had glimpsed of the Philippine history’s frame: pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial. Rizal got intrigued Jagor’s essay hence became interested not only in his country’s past but also his country’s future. Meanwhile, Quibuyen also cited in the chapter that Burgos, Rizal and Bonifacio constitute the three links in the nationalist movement from the 1870’s to the 1890’s. Meanwhile Rizal’s edition of Antonio Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas along with his Filipinas dentro de cien anos and Sobre la Indolencia de los Filipinos became the basis of national view of history which Bonifacio in turn would disseminate through the revolutionary Katipunan. The El Filibuserismo and Noli Me Tangere as stated by Quibuyen are necessary to determine who among its characters share with Rizal’s ideas. Sinibaldo de Mas, a civil servant in Madrid has made a colonial discourse on how to rule efficiently-â€Å" Informe  sobre el estado de las Islas Filipinas en 1842†. This became the cornerstone colonial practice in the Phillipines. Mas started with the premise that the question on how to rule depends on the government’s purpose. If the purpose of the government is to keep the islands as a colony, the regime must the three policy imperatives: (1)† the coloured population must voluntarily respect and obey the whites† (2) the growth of the creole class and the formation of liberals in the colony must be prevented; (3) the administration must undergo a thorough reform. Mas further pointed out that the creoles constitute a dangerous threat. However, Mas realized that it was best for Spain to prepare the Philippines for independence after when Mas had a tour of the country and had examination of the working of the colonial government. He concluded that the country was in fact useless to Spain and that it did not augment the Crown’s treasury. Meanwhile, the chapter progresses as Alatas stated that colonial discourse was a defensive reaction by the ruling class against popular movement for change. Lastly, I liked how Quibuyen ended up the chapter by corroborating that the radical ilustrados as mentioned by Quibuyen were â€Å"amateur intellectuals† because they never got paid for what they wrote and even had to suffer for it. For instance, Rizal who had to shoulder the cost of his research and publishing his books and instead of a book award , he ended up being exiled and executed.

All I can remember is that my mother passed away when I was around four or maybe five years old. I didn’t know my father, but heard of him sometimes. I have one blood sister that I know of, but don’t really know anything about her. However, I can say that I was adopted into a big family that raised and took care of me. Growing up with my new family, I learned how to cook, plant vegetables, clean and take care of myself. My sister on the other hand, was living with another family at that time. Although, I can’t remember a lot about my early years, but I do know me and my family always went fishing, hunting, picking peas on the farm and always celebrating something. Ever Easter, my parents would throw a cabaret, which I enjoyed the most, because people from everywhere would put on their best Sunday outfit just to win one of the contests that they had their. Christmas was a blessing, because everything I wanted I always got until I started snooping around and learned there was no Santa clause, and then it started getting boring. On the other hand, every holiday with my new family was great. ? The Early Years in School When I moved here from Michigan, high school was one of the most exciting and at the same time the most boring periods of my life. During my four years at Patterson Co-Op, I learned things but nothing of what I learned would be more confusing than my college course classes. During my freshman year of high school, I had just moved here from Michigan to Ohio. I had no friends and I was starting high school in about a month. As the days got closer to the start of the school year, I found some people to hang around with in the building I was living in however; they were going to a different school than me. The first day of school I was actually excited to go. I learned how to catch my first bus. When I arrive to school I nearly hit the floor, cause it reminded me a little of my old school in Michigan. I settled into this new atmosphere after a while and found out that it wasn’t so hard after all. As the year progressed I became more and more comfortable with the people and environment around me. Then here comes sophomore year. Sophomore year, I took up machine trades. There were only me and one other girl in this class which we became friends. Everyone always called us some tomboys, because we were the only girls who took this course up, which made it very weird for us. As the year was going we were the best in our division. We were in every skill trade competition you can name, made tools and even made the fellows mad. I still have all my awards up till this day. In my junior year, many new and interesting things happened. I made more friends, played basketball and even tried out for the cheerleading team while still taking up machine trades. Although, I never made the cheerleading team, but I can say I did join ROTC at the school. This was the best time ever, going to military balls, dances and even booth camp during the summer in Nashville, Tennessee. Senior year suppose to be the best year of high school. While getting ready for senior trips, dances, prep rallies and most of all graduation, well for me it was not so good. Last day, I just knew I had passed the profiecy test. When the scores came out I fell to the floor and started crying cause I had missed it by three points. However, I did get my diploma that summer year. I just could not walk across the stage and receive it like I always dreamed of. Upon graduation from Patterson Co-Op, I plan to acquire a logistics management position in industry. I was hoping to work in an environment in which I can help a company achieve its goals, as well as an environment that will provide me with personnel growth and development. With my educational background, machine trades/JROTC, cooperative work experience, and the desire to learn, I was capable of handling the challenges that the work force would bring. However, being fresh out of high school I didn’t accomplish this dream right off the back. I’ve work at many restaurants and also attended some college. During college, my career choice was to become a police officer. I was doing great until I became with child and my instructors’ told me I had to withdraw from the classes because pregnant women were not allowed to go through their training. Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. After years of trying I fondly landed a decent job in the manufacturing world. My Family Me and my family love to go on short trips. One trip I took the kids on was to Kansas City. Our children ranging from ten – five loved when we drove through St. Louis and passing the football stadium. Even though, it was a long drive (which I was told 6 hours) we had fun all the way there. My son and his dad went to check out the Chiefs stadium while we girls went on a shopping spree as usual. My family is a sport fans all the way especially loving the Cleveland Browns. I try to keep them very business with cheerleading, soccer, football and even base ball, although they hate the last one. However, I love them all more and more every day. My Life Now When I look at a picture of myself, I realized how much I’ve grown and changed, not only physically, but also mentally as a person in the last fifteen years. Remember the phrase â€Å"If I knew what I know now, things would be differently.† We’ll that phrase means a lot to me, but the only thing is, I would not change anything, just make it even better. Our lives know is going to school and getting an education while taking care of my family. My Future However, after so many years of working in the manualfacture world then being put out. I decide to change my life around and do something total different. Know that I am currently back into school after ten years I am taking up cooking classes, something I’ve never thought I would be doing, but it was time for something different and new. Right know I cannot predict my future especially with the economy the way it is. I’m just going to take it one day at a time and see what the future will bring me and hopefully it will be good. ? The Pequot War - A History The Pequot War - Background: The 1630s were a period of great unrest along the Connecticut River as various Native American groups battled for political power and control of trade with the English and Dutch. Central to this was an ongoing struggle between the Pequots and the Mohegans. While the former typically sided with the Dutch, who occupied the Hudson Valley, the latter tended to ally with the English in Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Connecticut. As the Pequots worked to expand their reach, they also came into conflict with the Wampanoag and Narragansetts. Tensions Escalate: As the Native American tribes fought internally, the English began to expand their reach in the area and founded settlements at Wethersfield (1634), Saybrook (1635), Windsor (1637), and Hartford (1637). In doing so, they came into conflict with the Pequots and their allies. These began in 1634 when a noted smuggler and slaver, John Stone, and seven of his crew were killed by the Western Niantic for attempting to kidnap several women and in retaliation for the Dutch killing of the Pequot chief Tatobem. Though Massachusetts Bay officials demanded those responsible be turned over, the Pequot chief Sassacus refused. Two years later, on July 20, 1836, trade John Oldham and his crew was attacked while visiting Block Island. In the skirmish, Oldham and several of his crew were killed and their ship looted by Narragansett-allied Native Americans. Though the Narragansetts typically sided with the English, the tribe on Block Island sought to discourage the English from trading with the Pequots. Oldhams death sparked outrage throughout the English colonies. Though Narragansett elders Canonchet and Miantonomo offered reparations for Oldhams death, Governor Henry Vane of Massachusetts Bay, ordered an expedition to Block Island. Fighting Begins: Assembling a force of around 90 men, Captain John Endecott sailed for Block Island. Landing on August 25, Endecott found that most of the islands population had fled or gone into hiding. Burning two villages, his troops carried off crops before re-embarking. Sailing west to Fort Saybrook, he next intended to capture the killers of John Stone. Picking up guides, he moved down the coast to a Pequot village. Meeting with its leaders, he soon concluded they were stalling and ordered his men to attack. Looting the village, they found that most of the inhabitants had departed. Sides Form: With the beginning of hostilities, Sassacus worked to mobilize the other tribes in the region. While the Western Niantic joined him, the Narragansett and Mohegan joined the English and the Eastern Niantic remained neutral. Moving to avenge Endecotts attack, the Pequot laid siege to Fort Saybrook through the fall and winter. In April 1637, a Pequot-allied force struck Wethersfield killing nine and kidnapping two girls. The following month, leaders of the Connecticut towns met in Hartford to begin planning a campaign against the Pequot. Fire at Mystic: At the meeting, a force of 90 militia under Captain John Mason assembled. This was soon augmented by 70 Mohegans led by Uncas. Moving down the river, Mason was reinforced by Captain John Underhill and 20 men at Saybrook. Clearing the Pequots from the area, the combined force sailed east and scouted Pequot Harbors fortified village (near present-day Groton) and Missituck (Mystic). Lacking sufficient forces to attack either, they continued east to Rhode Island and met with the Narragansett leadership. Actively joining the English cause, they provided reinforcements that enlarged the force to around 400 men. Having seen the English sail past, Sassacus wrongly concluded that they were retreating to Boston. As a result, he departed the area with the bulk of his forces to attack Hartford. Concluding the alliance with the Narragansetts, Masons combined force moved overland to strike from the rear. Not believing they could take Pequot Harbor, the army marched against Missituck. Arriving outside the village on May 26, Mason ordered it surrounded. Protected by a palisade, the village contained between 400 to 700 Pequots, many of them women and children. Believing his was conducting a holy war, Mason ordered the village set on fire and anyone trying to escape over the palisade shot. By the end of the fighting only seven Pequots remained to be taken prisoner. Though Sassacus retained the bulk of his warriors, the massive loss of life at Missituck crippled Pequot morale and demonstrated the vulnerability of his villages. Defeated, he sought sanctuary for his people on Long Island but was refused. As a result, Sassacus began leading his people west along the coast in the hope that they could settle near their Dutch allies. Final Actions: In June 1637, Captain Israel Stoughton landed at Pequot Harbor and found the village abandoned. Moving west in pursuit, he was joined by Mason at Fort Saybrook. Aided by Uncas Mohegans, the English force caught up to Sassacus near the Mattabesic village of Sasqua (near present-day Fairfield, CT). Negotiations ensued on July 13 and resulted in the peaceful capture of the Pequot women, children, and elderly. Having taken refuge in a swamp, Sassacus elected to fight with around 100 of his men. In the resulting Great Swamp Fight, the English and Mohegans killed around 20 though Sassacus escaped. Aftermath of the Pequot War: Seeking aid from the Mohawks, Sassacus and his remaining warriors were immediately killed upon arriving. Desiring to bolster goodwill with the English, the Mohawks sent Sassacus scalp to Hartford as an offering of peace and friendship. With the elimination of the Pequots, the English, Narragansetts, and Mohegans met at Hartford in September 1638 to distribute the captured lands and prisoners. The resulting Treaty of Hartford, signed on September 21, 1638, ended the conflict and resolved its issues. The English victory in the Pequot War effectively removed Native American opposition to the further settlement of Connecticut. Scared by the European total war approach to military conflicts, no Native American tribes sought to challenge English expansion until the outbreak of King Philips War in 1675. The conflict also laid the foundation for the perception of future conflicts with the Native Americans as battles between civilization/light and savagery/darkness. This historical myth, which persisted for centuries, first found its full expression in the years after the Pequot War.
